Then & Now

The Trumpy Legend

Before the Second World War erased frivolity, Trumpy Motor Yachts were the pastime toys of the rich and influential. Franklin Roosevelt, a Yankee sailor by birth, immediately commandeered the Trumpy Yacht Sequoia, into the War. He even installed an elevator to make his 'entrances' easier and more imposing. FDR found his Presidential Yacht an ideal venue for private chats with Heads of State and Politicians.
With the War at a close, President Truman, a mid-westerner and admitted landlubber, still found the Sequoia a charmer. Under his watch, she added a piano and a poker table, shifting easily into an amicable escape for a President who saw sailing more as a perk than a passion.
The Mauretania, like her close relative the Sequoia, has history and secrets buried deep within her bow. And like the President Yacht, she can change moods and switch destinations with all the ease and nonchalance that only a Trumpy of exceptional experience can summon.

The November 1947 issue of Yachting Magazine covered the newly built "Marylin" as she was called by her proud owner Colonel Frederick Pope. Today, she is the Mauretania, carefully maintained to her original standard of elegance...and newly appointed with a wealth of 'behind the scenes' safety and modern convenience upgrades.
